Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) was a “storyteller” in his paintings, particularly of african-american history.  He emphasized colors, shapes, lines, patterns, and movement in his paintings touching upon such topics as the crime, poverty, racial tensions, and police brutality. Students looked at various works by this Expressionist artist and used his style to tell their own story or events in their life.
